African American Inventors Project Nominate a "We Are One Community" person with an Award for building community and police relationships
My Community’s Keeper, a volunteer group from Step Up And Do Something! Inc., took on the challenge last year to bring awareness to African American Communities about the 34th Annual National Night Out Event. National Night Out is a celebration when police and community come together to build relationships and do fun activities together.
I noticed in many African American communities people were not participating in this event becasue they just never heard of it before, didn’t feel welcomed or just never got invited to an event. So I partnered with The City of San Jose to help bring awarness about this annual event.
I won the Rookie of the Year for hosting my event and planning opportunities for the community and police to build relationships in a positive environment. In 2017, 38.5 million people and more than 16,500 communities participated in National Night Out.
This year our goal is to reach out to 300 people or more and invite them to our event. Our mission is to support the community in building trust and respect with our local Police Officers and for Police Officers to come into our community to get to know us better.
